Which is Right for You

Buy or rent a house

In the real estate world, there's an age-old question—Is it better to rent or buy? Each generation faces it, and really, the answer depends on a variety of factors. When you look at the average everyday scenario, it's easy to see the positives and negatives of both buying a house and renting. It's about knowing what's best for you.

Economics of Buy vs. Rent

Years ago, buying a house was one of the first things you did post-college when you got your first job. Now people are waiting longer to take the plunge, and for a good reason. Buying a home isn't always the sound investment it once was, nor is it easily afforded. If your job will take awhile to earn you a solid income, buying a house can put you underwater.

Beat Home Buying Stress

Buying a home is a huge undertaking. It is time-consuming and can have several ups and downs along the way.  Overall, it can be very stressful.  However, there are ways to take some of the stress out of buying a home.

Here are "Six Surefire Ways to Beat the Stress of Buying a Home."

1. Know What You Want

Touring homes takes a lot of time. One way to cut down on the number of places you visit is to list out exactly what you want. Start with naming the highest priorities, and note things you can live without if necessary. Things to consider are:

  • Price range – Be realistic about what you can afford. One of the biggest disappointments is falling in love with a house and realizing it's just not feasible.
  • Type of home – Are you interested in condos, townhomes, single-family homes, or does it matter.
  • Bedrooms and bathrooms – Look at your family (or potential family), lifestyle, and needs and determine the numbers. Factor in frequency of guests, home offices/ hobby rooms, and kids.
  • Location – Location spans a number of things, including neighborhoods, proximity to work, access to highways or public transportation, or community amenities.
  • Odds and ends – Other things people look at are schools, age of home, number of levels in home, square footage, yard, and maintenance or renovations needed.

2. Tackle Finances Before the Search

Finances are an important part of buying a home. Without loan approval or budgets, you may lose out on a house. Before you start searching get pre-approved for your loan, secure the cash for your down payment, and look at the whole financial picture.

Home buying has costs that are often not considered ahead of time. These include inspections, application fees, credit checks, and the earnest money deposit. It's helpful to create a monthly budget for after you buy your home too. Make sure to add all the costs of home ownership.

3. Be Flexible

Be flexible and stay open—it's essential to understand that your approach will affect your stress levels. If you are determined to find the perfect home, it probably won't happen. The key is to stay open to the possibilities. Many homes can become your dream home over the years, while others will have most of the components you want. Be reasonable with your requirements, and try to only focus on the important ones. Also, don't ask for too much advice from extended family and friends, the only opinion that counts in the end is yours and that of anyone who will be living in the new house.

4. Take a Break

Buying a home can get all-consuming. Make sure you are taking time to do something else every once in a while. Take a break to go workout or have coffee with a friend. When it feels like all you're doing is eating, breathing, and dreaming about new houses, it's probably time to go have a little fun.

5. Don't Take it Personally

Sellers are looking for the best offer, and at times, yours won't be it. Sometimes, sellers just aren't ready to sell even if an offer is perfect. Look at "rejection" as an opportunity to find something better. You never know what house is right around the corner.

Canton Michigan Winter Homes

Canton, Michigan has been recognized as one of the state's fastest growing communities with over 90,000 residents.  Its location between Detroit and Ann Arbor makes it desirable for both residents and businesses alike.

But What Makes Canton So Appealing to Newcomers?

A strong community spirit makes Canton an excellent choice when relocating to the area.  This family-oriented community has an excellent educational system, a nationally recognized public services department, top notch community facilities and a wide variety of local eateries and shops.  Six community parks, a state-of-the-art community center, two golf courses, and a world-class theater, add to Canton's resume.

Canton real estate opportunities range in price depending upon square footage, land and location.  Home buyers can choose from cozy, one- and two-story, single-family homes in established neighborhoods to newly built homes in one of Canton's growing new home community developments.

Would-be home owners choosing to build their dream home may opt for one of the area's new home developments like Hickory Ridge or Westridge Estates.

Hickory Ridge

Hickory Ridge features 42 homes on two private cul-de-sacs located southeast of Ford and Ridge Roads.

If you're looking to call Hickory Ridge home, you're in luck because it has so much to offer. Hickory Ridge is part of the award-winning Plymouth-Canton School District that includes Workman Elementary, Pioneer Middle School, Plymouth/Canton/Salem High School, and Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.

Whether it's shopping, dining at a nearby eatery, attending a sporting event or a cultural performance, there is always something to do when you own a Hickory Ridge home.  Canton's state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center provides outstanding entertainment opportunities. Only 2.5 miles from the Ford Road Shopping District, you can find restaurants, shopping, and entertainment venues.

Nearby Plymouth and Northville provide a more charming setting for one-of-a-kind specialty shops and restaurants. With Ann Arbor and Detroit only a 20-minute drive away, cultural and entertainment attractions are offered on a larger scale to locals and visitors.

Westridge Estates

Westridge Estates is found just south of Ford Road on the west side of Ridge Road in West Canton, Michigan.  It is Canton's only new luxury home community with resort-style amenities.  Homeowners will have exclusive access to a beautiful clubhouse complete with a fitness center, gathering room, kitchen, locker rooms and veranda plus an outdoor lap pool, kiddie pool, a volleyball court and walking paths.

Westridge Estates original community development plans include the construction of 94 luxury homes with a total of 274 homes ranging in size from 2,500 to 4,000 square feet.  Homes are expected to include a list of can't be beat features plus hundreds of pre-priced options to make your home uniquely yours.

Children can attend the acclaimed Plymouth-Canton (P-CCS) school district which serves the majority of homes for sale in Canton MI; however, several private schools are located nearby from which you may choose.

Westridge Estates is located only minutes from the area's best arts, recreation, and shopping opportunities.  Locals can choose from a performance at the Village Theater at Cherry Hill or a round of golf at Pheasant Run Golf Course.  Get your daily workout in at Canton's Summit on the Park or hike through the areas nearly 15 miles of nature trails.
